Reflecting on a New Academic Year

There is something we at Civic Safeguard Strategies like about the beginning of a new school year.

Across the country, students are heading back to campuses. New classes, new schedules, new people. Whatever happened last semester, there is a sense of beginning again.

It got us thinking about how useful those built-in resets are, and how few of them exist in the work of protecting and strengthening democracy.

There is always another development to follow, another decision to respond to, another reason this particular moment feels too important to step away.

But the road to a strong democracy is long. The people defending it and upholding it have to last.

At Civic Safeguard Strategies, we specialize in preparedness. Rest, reflection, and renewal are part of that, too. Organizations cannot operate indefinitely at emergency tempo, and neither can the people inside them.

The academic calendar builds in endings and beginnings. A chance to stop, regroup, and come back.

The long work of democracy doesn't necessarily give us those breaks.

Sometimes we have to make them for ourselves.
